CUMPLICIDADES configures itself as a new event in each edition. Inviting someone always different to project/design the national participations ensures a renewed glance. The complicity of diverse partnerships in its hosting fosters plurality and an urban dynamic that aims at reaching an audience that is also plural.

In 2023, in addition to the programme established by Luiz Antunes, were added proposals selected from an open call for artists of foreign origin residing in Portugal. The pandemic period did not benefit the visibility of recently established professionals, resulting in an attempt to present creations from diverse labour and aesthetic paths across several continents. The whole is reinforced by the proposal aimed at children and young people, and by the articulation with regular training for EIRA professionals.

CUMPLICIDADES marks contemporary dance in the city’s imagination, claiming that territory, although aware of the growing interdisciplinary practice and hybridity. It defends the heterogeneity of interventions in the public forum, however it establishes itself within dance in order to better question its borders, its definition. (Francisco Camacho)

Two Faces – Programming cycle (Luiz Antunes)

In this edition of the Cumplicidades Festival that takes place in Lisbon, the artists are challenged to create from a particular angle, opinion or event related to this edition’s premises: Limits and borders, two faces: sapiens sapiens. We are all Sapiens. We are all accomplices. Two faces of Janus, as a paradigmatic image of these different realities.

The concepts, although ample, lead us to an idea of reflection on the troubled phase of evolution in which we live. From macro concepts, we narrow the look to the thought of borders that are limits and limits that delimit borders. Cultural borders, borders between countries, borders of regions, of cities, of neighbourhoods, of the body itself, of inner places.

To promote the creation of thought and reflection about the crisis of values, democratic spaces, transmutations, new looks about places, about the sapiens of those places. It is urgent that we have a thought about ourselves, so that we can allow ourselves a viable evolution, without being the most implacable and violent species.

Face to Face – Talks

This cycle refers to the universe of reflection, production of thought and knowledge from the creations and programmed events.

The speech around arts analysis and criticism, and in this particular case, around dance and performative arts, is often circumscribed to hermetic places and merely of almost technical reflections. But what remains in us from what we have seen? What do we take to our places and what implication does it have on us? The place of stories can also serve to think our conditions (ideas, emotions, abilities, etc.).

The gathering of researchers and professionals from different areas in this meeting will also open new perspectives regarding the reflection on the performances and the themes addressed by their creators. Thinking about Dance in the XXI century, in a transversal way, in terms of different generations and different places of thought is a stepping to open new platforms of comprehension of Dance as a cultural and social phenomenon in contemporaneity, as well as a new way of communicating, not only artistic, but also interventive.

In this set of Conferences/Talks, with themes suggested through the works of the programmed artists, the guest speakers engage in a set of thoughts and debates, allowing the work to endure beyond itself.

This process implies the proximity of the guest speakers to the artworks, so that this may be the core of different reflections.
