Francisco Camacho and Magnum Soares set out on this project to deepen the artistic and professional relationship they have been building since 2019. Their duet goes even further back in time, looking at their roots and their histories, confronting personal experiences around the places they came from, where they’ve been and where they are. One is Brazilian and the other Portuguese, linking them to a third continent: Africa, where Magnum’s ancestors come from and where Francisco spent his childhood.
The duet wants to embrace their cultural, physical and age differences, but to focus on the purpose of meeting each other. Thus, the choreography takes the touch between their bodies as its strong point, exploring the contact between their bodies-in-wrappings and their desire to access each other’s knowledge of themselves and the other. They devise ways for their bodies to inhabit each other, to fit together and support each other. In this movement, they challenge themselves to explore work areas that are not the usual territory of one or the other, challenging themselves to experience new performative modalities, for each and for both.
Sharing and evoking their memories, Magnum Soares and Francisco Camacho draw on family records, their own and those of other people. There is a desire for fiction here, with the artists rewriting personal stories and manipulating these records. This operation wants to question a history written beyond personal wills, which cannot escape the action of ancestors, those linked by blood to the creators, as well as figures who in the exercise of power remotely determined the circumstances of today’s lives.
