After the Frame

Francisco Camacho

Jeff Wall’s work first appeared in choreographer Francisco Camacho’s creative universe when he was inspired by the 1993 photograph A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai) to create the emblematic show Gust in 1997.
Conceived specifically for the context of the exhibition Jeff Wall – Time Stands Still. Fotografias, 1980-2023 at MAAT, Camacho proposes a new choreographic incursion, now accompanied by Beatriz Valentim, João Oliveira and Sofia Kafol, who danced in the remake entitled GUST9723, presented in 2023.
The proposal takes you on a journey through the exhibition spaces, establishing a dialogue with the works present, but also integrating elements from other images not included in the show. The ensemble of performers reappropriates the vocabulary of movement developed by Camacho and evokes the iconic photograph by Jeff Wall that originally motivated the creation.
The bodies startle, adjust, meet and mismatch. They react to external impulses in an environment where danger lurks, where there is suspicion and the imminence of a possible outbreak of violence.
